In this yoga workshop, appropriate for all levels of yoga and athletic experience, you’ll learn poses to increase flexibility, especially in the hips and legs; spend some time cultivating sport-specific core strength and playing with balance; and examine yoga as mental training, learning how incorporating this ancient approach can make you a better athlete. No matter what your sport is, you’ll leave with practical ways to incorporate yoga in your training to increase your flexibility, core strength, stability, and physical and mental endurance, while lowering your recovery time and risk of injury.
Friday August 31, 2012 @ All Day at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health
I’m very excited to expand my usual Yoga for Athletes weekend workshop at Kripalu into a long-weekend format. The two extra sessions will allow us to add a second strength-building practice and to explore yin yoga together. If you have been thinking about visiting Kripalu, join us! This is sure to be a fantastic time together. The trails are wonderful, and the lake may even be warm enough for a hardy open-water swimmer.
For all levels of athletic or yoga experience; no prior yoga experience required.
Athletes are often turned off by yoga because it seems too hard, too easy, or out of sync with their training. Triathlete, coach, and yoga teacher Sage Rountree demystifies yoga and explains exactly how it fits with training and competition. Yoga’s emphasis on form, focus, and breath translates to increased efficiency and enjoyment in your sport and your life.
This weekend, learn poses to increase your range of motion and flexibility, especially in the hips and hamstrings. Spend time cultivating sport-specific core strength and balance, examine yoga as mental training, and learn how incorporating yoga’s approach to mind-body integration can make you a better athlete. Practicing the poses and techniques taught in this workshop increases your flexibility, core strength, stability, balance, and physical and mental endurance while lowering recovery time and risk of injury.
Weather permitting, we’ll head out for a run one or both mornings, so bring running gear if you would like to join.
This program is eligible for :
- 8.5 credits for Yoga Alliance (YA), $20 additional charge
- 8.5 credits for Athletic Trainers (BOC), $20 additional charge

Yoga is the union or awareness of two things that seem opposite. Light/dark, warm/cold, energy moving up/energy moving down, breath in/breath out. Come explore two complementary asana practices and cultivate yin and yang energy with us in this all-levels workshop. Yang is a fiery practice, flowing to build heat in the body, and connects the breath with the movement. Yin is a practice that allows us to go within, sit still, and breathe deeply as we notice what rises up from taking our seat in a pose and staying in the pose.
We’ll start with a flow moving through sun salutations, standing balances, and backbends, all leading to some long holds in hip openers and heart openers, and we’ll end with a sweet breath practice before final relaxation.

We’ll find comfort and joy as we move slowly through a variety of expressions of tree pose and complementary asanas, finishing with a nice long rest to relax us as we approach the peaceful and bright evening.
This beloved annual tradition is a great time to connect with family members—we had three generations of one family last year!—and community as we settle into the quiet of the holiday’s arrival at long last.
